The Vienna doubles winners Alexander Erler and Lucas Miedler kept Austria’s chance of a Davis Cup triumph over Croatia alive with an outsider success on Sunday. After a 1:50 hour thriller, Erler/Miedler defeated Ivan Dodig/Nikola Mektic in the qualifying round in Rijeka 6:3,7:6(11) and thus reduced the total to 1:2.
Dominic Thiem then has the opportunity to equalize in the number 1 duel with Borna Coric. In a dramatic second round, Erler/Miedler only used the fifth match point and even fended off three set points from the hosts. If Austria still wants to achieve the “Miracle of Rijeka”, Captain Jürgen Melzer’s team must win both outstanding singles.
