“That’s pretty borderline”said the two heads of sports at Rieder, Thomas Reicheltshammer and Wolfgang Fiala, after the first half of the quarter-finals of the cup between Wiener Sportclub and SV Guntamatic Ried on Saturday evening in Vienna-Hernals. Borderline meant the completely battered lawn of the regional league club, which made a normal football game almost impossible.
The ball bounced again and again, liquid combinations were hardly possible due to the adverse field conditions. The fans didn’t care, around 6000 spectators came, sold out. Most were hoping for the next cup surprise from the sports club, which had previously knocked out two Bundesliga clubs in Lustenau and Austria Wien.

The Ried sector on the only covered grandstand on the sports field was also sold out, and more than 500 Innviertler fans came to the first competitive game of the year.
It wasn’t just Reifeltshammer and Fiala watching the game from the fan stands, President Roland Daxl, board members Maximilian Schmidt and Robert Tremel and the injured goalkeeper Samuel Sahin-Radlinger were also in the away sector. “It hurts that I can only watch”said Sahin-Radlinger, who is expected to be sidelined for three months due to a knee injury.
penalty gift
It was 0-0 at the break. “We have to keep at it, at some point we score the first goal”, said Sahin-Radlinger at half-time. He should be right. A more than controversial penalty whistle shortly after half-time was the can opener for Rieder. New left-back Roko Jurisic was touched in the penalty area and went down. Referee Walter Altmann looked at the action again and – quite surprisingly – stuck to his decision.

The second new signing, Christoph Lang, safely converted the penalty in front of the SV Ried fans. Just a few minutes after falling behind, the next blow to the neck for the sports club: central defender Luka Gusic had to leave the field with a yellow card. With the loud support of their own fans, Rieder brought victory to dry land. The 2:0 by Leo Mikic in the 79th minute finally brought the decision.
Both fan camps celebrated
After the game, both teams were celebrated by their fans. The Rieder because they made it into the cup semi-finals again, the Viennese because they played a great cup season.
“Team morale and attitude was excellent. Nobody complained about the place, everyone accepted the fight from the first second”said Fiala after the game.

Focus on the relegation battle
Rieder will also need these virtues next Sunday: in the Josko Arena at 2.30 p.m. there will be a duel between penultimate Ried and bottom of the table Hartberg.
The cup continues with the semifinals between April 4th and 6th. The draw will take place on February 19th. Ried only has one wish: a home game.
