Sandra Reichel announced a “superlative tournament week” for the Upper Austria Ladies in Linz. The 32nd edition, which is starting today (from 10 a.m.) with the final round of qualification and the main competition in the Design Center, also has world ranking seventh Maria Sakkari, Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin and double Olympic champion Katerina Siniakova numerous top names at the start this year. Since yesterday, Austria’s hopes have only rested on Julia Grabher’s shoulders, admittedly well trained.
Hard lot: On the recommendation of her trainer Günter Bresnik, the Vorarlberg native, who for the first time in her career last year made it into the top 100 in the world rankings, also trained with Austria’s decathlete Dominik Distelberger in the pre-season. “It definitely opened up new worlds for me in terms of fitness,” says Grabher. For their first round appearance in Linz, which is expected to take place on Wednesday, the luck of the draw in the drawing at the Ars Electronica Center was not necessarily on the 26-year-old’s side. The number 80 in the world is waiting with the American Madison Brengle. “You won’t get easy opponents with this top line-up anyway,” says Grabher.
Early Off: Six ÖTV players wanted to take the chance to qualify for the main draw. Barbara Haas was unsuccessful in her ninth appearance in Linz, losing 2: 6, 1: 6 to Viktoriya Tomova. Her Upper Austrian colleagues Melanie Klaffner (6:7, 4:6 against Dalma Galfi) and the only 17-year-old Johanna Hiesmair (3:6, 2:6 against Andrea Gamiz) also failed. And Sinja Kraus, Alina Michalitsch and Veronika Bokor also got stuck.
Late highlight: The Linz tennis classic is also known for its social events during the tournament week. The traditional Players’ Party will start tonight. “Always a highlight in Linz,” exults tournament ambassador Babsi Schett.
