Austria’s women’s team made the almost perfect start to the 47th Alpine Ski World Championships, which was not expected in this form. After sharp critics and pessimists had predicted a drought in the title fights for the ÖSV ladies due to the supposed crisis in the technical disciplines, Ricarda Haaser rose like a phoenix from the ashes and won the first medal in the opening competition in Méribel with bronze.
You can build on that. The Super-G is already on the agenda tomorrow (11 a.m., ORF 1 and live ticker on nachrichten.at). Haaser has no body, the red-white-red quartet is made up of Cornelia Hütter, who is not 100% fit and has already been second twice this season, Ramona Siebenhofer, Mirjam Puchner and Tamara Tippler.
Racing director Thomas Trinker is not lacking in confidence. Especially after Haaser’s coup, which only triggers a limited sense of satisfaction in the Styrian. But one thing is clear: After the many sporting slaps in the face, this success is extremely good. There is no settlement with the Suderantes.
“We’re going all-in, so to speak”
“We have a very good material of girls. They are the ones who try the most. Sometimes it goes well, sometimes not,” said Trinker. And: “It’s like football, there are eight million team bosses. We’re a sport that generates interest, and we’re very happy about that. Being criticized when things aren’t going so well is a normal process. “
The field of medal contenders in the Super-G is large. There have been five different winners in the five races of the season so far: Corinne Suter (Sui), Mikaela Shiffrin (USA), Combined World Champion Federica Brignone (Ita), Lara Gut-Behrami (Sui) and Ranghild Mowinckel (Nor).
Drinker expects a hot dance. “We hope that we will take the positive spirit with us into the next races. The Super-G in the station wagon was very good. The signs are right, we’re going all-in, so to speak.”
At the 2021 World Championships in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Gut-Behrami triumphed in the Super-G, the Austrians went away empty-handed. As the best of the quartet, Tippler finished seventh. Now the cards are being reshuffled.
