Matchday 20: “Step forward”: Mainz celebrate victory

FSV Mainz 05 scored important points in the fight against relegation with the 3-1 win over FC Augsburg. In the carnival stronghold, the third home win of the season puts everyone in a good mood.

Bo Svensson was not in the greatest mood to celebrate despite the exuberant carnival atmosphere in the spectator stands after his FSV Mainz 05’s 3-1 (2-1) win over FC Augsburg.

“It was a step forward. We have to keep at it,” said the Danish head coach of Rheinhessen after the last home game before Shrove Monday. The now clear distance to the relegation zone is important, “but putting all the focus on it makes no sense”.

It was the third home win for Mainz this season. The South Korean Jae-sung Lee played a major part in this with his two goals (21st/52nd minute), Karim Onisiwo (24th) also scored in front of 22,200 spectators. Ermedin Demirovic (28th) scored the goal to make it 1-2 for Augsburg with a hand penalty.

Augsburg with a “used day” – praise for Lee

“We lost ourselves with gross individual mistakes. We didn’t find our way to our game with possession,” said Augsburg coach Enrico Maaßen and concluded: “All in all, it was a used day. The development has been up so far, now it’s gone manager Stefan Reuter didn’t look for excuses for the defeat either: “Too many players were playing under form.”The Swabians remained without a win in the fifth away game in a row and have to look down in the table.

On the other hand, Mainz currently has a secure position in the middle of the table. “We have to try to get on with it,” said sporting director Martin Schmidt. It was a difficult game because “there was a lot of pressure in the boiler”. In fact, the game was characterized by hectic pace and tough duels.

Pioneering the hosts’ success was midfielder Lee, who took his strike average to six and received plenty of praise. “Lee is a very important factor in our game. If he continues like this, he will be very valuable,” said attacker Onisiwo, who described the performance of the 05ers as “overall okay”.

Lee follows up after a goal

The goal against was a bit unfortunate to make it 1:2. Leandro Barreiro was shot in his own penalty area with his arm outstretched from a meter away, referee Sven Jablonski only decided after using the video evidence of a hand penalty. “I jumped in there with my arms not taped,” said Barreiro. Demirovic converted safely. “We dealt with the goal very well because Augsburg didn’t give up,” Svensson praised his team.

He was able to breathe a sigh of relief when Lee made it 3-1 in the 52nd minute and an alleged goal by Augsburg’s Kelvin Yeboah in the 75th minute was disallowed. Mainz goalkeeper Finn Dahmen already had his hand on the ball when Yeboah shot on target – so the goal didn’t count.
