World Cup qualification: rioting by Hungarian fans during the game against England at Wembley

The first few minutes on the lawn between England and Hungary were of minor importance: a wild brawl took place in the guest block.

Violent clashes broke out on the sidelines of the World Cup qualifier between England and Hungary in London. During the early stages of the game, parts of the 800 guest supporters at Wembley Stadium engaged in fights and tumultuous scenes with the security forces.

After almost 20 minutes, stewards and the police, who had used batons, finally managed to calm down the block of away fans.

The London Metropolitan Police said in a statement during the game that “racially motivated and insulting comments against a folder” were the reason for their intervention in the block. There was a “minor riot” after an arrest. The FA also came forward and announced an investigation.

Hungarian fans caused tumult several times

The police in the English capital had taken special security precautions in advance to prevent problems with the notorious Hungary fans – in vain. Before the kick-off, the guest supporters booed loudly when the England national team fell on their knees and presented a banner as a protest.

It is not the first time in the recent past that such scenes have taken place with the participation of Hungarian fans. Among other things, they misbehaved during their guest appearance in Munich in the summer and attracted attention in September when some of them racially insulted English actors during the first leg.

Around Wembley there had also been a whole series of unsightly scenes in July during the European Championship final between the Three Lions and Italy. Among other things, hundreds of supporters stormed the stadium without tickets.

Then there was criticism of the security measures and the FA announced at the time, with a view to its application to host the 2030 World Cup, that it wanted to put everything to the test. There was also an investigation by UEFA into the incident.
