Champions League: Praise from Kahn: “Here in Paris you have to win first”

The first step has been taken, coach Nagelsmann wants to take the second against PSG with his team at home in Munich. After the 1-0 in Paris, it’s FC Bayern’s advantage. The danger is Kylian Mbappé.

In the team hotel at the Eiffel Tower, Bayern boss Oliver Kahn complimented the Munich winners around goalscorer Kingsley Coman. “Here in Paris you have to win first,” said Kahn after Bayern Munich’s 1-0 (0-0) win in the Champions League round of 16 first leg against Paris Saint Germain on Wednesday night at the celebration with sponsors and noble fans. “We have created great conditions for the second leg,” said the CEO on stage, surrounded by the team.

On March 8th, there will be a decisive second showdown in Munich with the PSG team led by attacking stars Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappé. After his substitution, Bayern win after “King” Coman’s volley hit in the 53rd minute once again in serious danger. “It’s no secret games at this level are not decided in the first leg,” noted Kahn.

Coman: “We were also a bit lucky in the end”

“The first step has been taken, we would like to take the second step,” said Julian Nagelsmann on one of his most beautiful and important evenings as Bayern coach. His tactical and personnel plans worked. In the second leg, however, he will lack Benjamin Pavard as a defence. The Frenchman saw the yellow-red card in stoppage time and is therefore suspended for one game.

In his hometown on Tuesday evening, it was again the 26-year-old Coman who scored decisively against his ex-club, where he had started his football career as a child. Like in the 2020 final in Lisbon, when the France international headed the winning goal against PSG to make it 1-0. “This is my home. I was born here. We can achieve a lot if we play like this,” said Coman. The match winner admitted: “We also had some luck at the end.”

Quarterfinals not sure yet

Bayern needed Dusel when Mbappé, who had recovered from a thigh injury, entered the pitch. Suddenly PSG’s game was completely different. The pace was there, there were chances to score. Mbappé scored two goals, but they were disallowed for offside. And once he failed in front of Yann Sommer because of Bayern’s strong goalkeeper. “You can see when Mbappé plays that he can be the game changer,” said Nagelsmann about the blatant game changer Mbappé.

In the second leg in three weeks in the Allianz Arena, Bayern will have to fear and fight the French World Cup top scorer with the turbo speed for over 90 minutes. Bayern captain Joshua Kimmich is “not at all sure” about reaching the quarter-finals, as he emphasized in the Prinzenpark: “It’s a tough task in the second leg.”
