“After seven seasons with Mike Day, I have decided to take a new direction with a new leadership within my team for the next phase of my career,” the American said on Tuesday evening through her PR supervisor.
The US Ski and Snowboard Association announced that Day no longer works for the organization. The news went out less than two days before the World Cup giant slalom in Méribel, Shiffrin is considered the favorite for gold in the discipline as in the slalom on Saturday.
The 27-year-old had recently prepared for the World Cup races in Orcières-Merlette, where she was the focus of environmental organizations because of the helicopter flights she allegedly offered from her hotel. She covered the distances by car.
What Shiffrin’s new coaching team will look like is not yet known. Styrian Mark Mitter has also been part of her coaching staff since the beginning of this season, her mother Eileen continues to be her most important contact and also takes on coaching tasks.
