The Swede made one shooting error and prevailed over her clean-shooting compatriot Linn Persson. Bronze went to Italy’s Lisa Vittozzi (1 penalty). Herrmann-Wick had previously won gold in the sprint and silver in the pursuit in Thuringia. Now she missed the top ten. Best German was World Cup debutant Sophia Schneider (4).
Herrmann, individual Olympic champion from Beijing, started the race with start number 31 as the last of the favorites. This was a disadvantage on the course, which became more and more difficult due to the plus grades in the course of the competition, and she also had problems for the first time on the Rennsteig with partly windy conditions.
The last German world champion in the most traditional biathlon race was Laura Dahlmeier in 2017 in Hochfilzen, the last World Cup medal had recently retired Vanessa Hinz 2020 in Antholz with silver.
