World Cup gold for ski superstar Mikaela Shiffrin in giant slalom. The German ski aces follow in France.

Ski superstar Mikaela Shiffrin won gold in the giant slalom at the Alpine World Championships in France. The American won in Méribel with a lead of 0.12 seconds over combined world champion Federica Brignone from Italy. Norway’s Ragnhild Mowinckel took bronze.

For Shiffrin it is the 13th World Championship medal and the second in the current title fights in France after silver in the Super-G. World champion in giant slalom is the most successful female ski racer in history, who surprisingly parted ways with her long-time trainer Mike Day in the past few days, for the first time. In 2018 she triumphed in this discipline at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

The German starters Kira Weidle and Jessica Hilzinger were eliminated in the first round. Emma Aicher was 32nd after the first run.
