“I feel a bit stupid,” said Sebastian Samuelsson after finishing fourth in the single mixed relay of the Biathlon World Championships in Oberhof with compatriot Hanna Öberg.
The 25-year-old might have been in contention for the medals if he hadn’t made an unnecessary mistake in the final standing stage. Before Samuelsson, Johannes Thingnes Bö (Norway), David Komatz (Austria) and Tommaso Giacomel (Italy) had all been shooting, so he should have run to the fourth mat. But Samuelsson went to the third lane, on which a gust had just shot over all the targets.
“You don’t look too closely, then I’m instructed and realize that I went on the wrong mat. That was a bit awkward,” said Samuelsson, who lost important seconds when changing the mat. Komatz and Giacomel were still at the shooting range.
He was unlucky in the other season as well
As if that wasn’t enough, the incident didn’t help his concentration, and three misses followed. Samuelsson also criticized the officials afterwards: “I thought he had pointed to the third lane, because when I drive in there it goes so fast that I don’t have time to think.”
Samuelsson is probably the unlucky man at this World Cup: A screw on his rifle had already come loose in the mixed relay. As the final runner he had to go into the penalty loop and Sweden remained without a medal.
His shooting error in the single-mixed relay played into Austria’s hands: Lisa Hauser and David Komatz took silver.
