The 27-year-old ex-world champion distanced the South Korean by 0.12 seconds in 37.96 seconds in Tomaszow Mazoviecki in Poland on Friday. Kim was undefeated in five races over this distance during the season. Third place went to Jutta Leerdam (NED/38.14 sec). It’s Herzog’s eighth World Cup win, the first in almost three years.
“I’m super proud of myself. It was a really worthy end to the World Cup year. Above all, it was really good to beat Kim,” said Herzog, who finished second in the World Cup after three second places and this win. “It was my fastest start time this season, certainly on the slowest ice where we’ve skied World Cups this year.”
Over 1,500 m, Gabriel Odor, still weak after a cold, finished 14th in the B division in 1:50.73 min. He will compete in the mass start on Sunday. Herzog will start on Sunday for a top position in the 1,000 m. Last weekend, the Carinthian-by-choice finished fourth over this distance and over 500 m, 0.19 seconds behind Kim, finished second. The World Championships in the Netherlands are scheduled for March 2-5.
