Although the brand of the “three strips” has the priority to renew, in the last hours a formal proposal arrived at the Núñez club that modifies the entire scenario of the negotiations and makes the leaders think. Puma, which until a few hours ago had only shown interest through talks, submitted a written offer making the formalities official. The proposal is $ 1,800,000 more than what Adidas currently pays, that is, more than 30%. In addition, it offers 20% of the royalties for sales of official clothing.
Negotiation
The idea of the brand is to be able to add the Millionaire to the first row of teams that are already part of the company, such as Manchester City, Milan and Borussia, among others and also to be able to stomp in the country and the continent.
Adidas -which three weeks ago presented a new alternative model- will now have to sit down to negotiate with the River leadership as a matter of urgency because in the current contract it has the priority to match or improve any offer that reaches the club. However, it has a deadline to do so: until October 31. However, Adidas after that date also has the power to offer a higher amount than that presented by its competitors until December 31, when the contract ends.
However, the relationship between River and Adidas has been going through some turbulence in recent times, after the German company closed with Boca – which was dressed by the American Nike – an agreement with which its classic rival receives 20% more than profit and also better conditions in the distribution of the sale not only in the country, but also abroad.
Although the contract he signed with Adidas in November 2015 until December 2021 does not contain any clause that establishes that Núñez’s club has to be the best payment in Argentina, the arrival of Boca greatly annoyed the River world.
River collects from Adidas a figure close to $ 8,000,000 per year that can be increased by royalties or sports goals. The contract that Boca signed with the German brand and which came into effect in January 2020 establishes that the club will charge US $ 10,069,000 per season, plus royalties. In addition, it will have a bonus of u $ s3,000,000 for the signing plus prizes for titles obtained (300,000 for the Super League Cup, 900,000 for the Argentine Super League, 200,000 for the South American Recopa, 350,000 for the South American Cup, 1,000,000 for the Copa Libertadores and 1,100,000 for the Club World Cup). Likewise, there will be an annual bonus for the Bombonera Museum store (US $ 200,000) and for the development of the Marketing department (US $ 90,000).
Production power
At Adidas they think that, beyond what has to do with the economic offer raised by Puma, currently there is no other company other than the brand of the “three strips” with sufficient production power to be able to comply with the River’s obligations, which range from dressing all the teams of all the club’s disciplines, to carrying out a massive distribution of clothing at a national and international level.
In the last conversations between directors of River and Adidas, the improvement of bonuses for obtaining sporting achievements and the percentage of royalties were discussed.
In Núñez they knew that a concrete possibility was to sign a bond for the same value that had been charged as happened to Flamengo when he renewed last year with Adidas. From Adidas they assure that the negotiation will be minute by minute and they trust that the contractual bond will not be broken due to the old relationship they maintain.
However, the appearance of Puma’s offer puts the discussion on the overall figure of the contract and moves the board of negotiations.
