Lionel Messi upset referee in World Cup qualifying: “As if he did it on purpose”

Lionel Messi has expressed dissatisfaction with Wilton Sampaio’s performance, accusing him of “deliberately” making contentious decisions.

After the 1-0 win in Peru in the World Cup qualifying, Argentina’s superstar Lionel Messi was furious about referee Wilton Sampaio and accused the Brazilian referee of making “deliberate” decisions against the Albiceleste.

Reason for Messi’s annoyance: After an alleged foul by Argentina’s goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez in the penalty area, the hosts were awarded a penalty, which Yoshimar Yotun was unable to use to equalize Peru in the 62nd minute.

“Difficult encounter, difficult to play. It was windy, they were low and left us little space,” said Messi on Instagram on Friday before hinting at a Sampaio conspiracy. “The referee always does that when he whistles for us. As if he did it on purpose. But well, three important points that bring us closer to our goal.”

Although Messi does not seem to agree with all of the decisions, the Albiceleste are unbeaten in five games when Sampaio was the referee.
