Even before BVB signed Jude Bellingham, there was huge interest in the young Englishman. Edwin van der Sar remembers.
Before Jude Bellingham moved to Borussia Dortmund, Ajax Amsterdam worked intensively on signing the midfielder. Managing director Edwin van der Sar revealed this in an interview with Tuttosport. “I’ve always liked him. So much so that when he was playing for Birmingham we spoke to his parents about bringing him to Ajax,” said the keeper legend.
Accordingly, the talks took place a year before Bellingham’s move to BVB. The now 18-year-old decided to stay with Birmingham City.
BVB: Jude Bellingham is under contract until 2025
“In the end, the boy and his family preferred to stay at home in England at this point and he postponed the international experience until the following year,” said van der Sar.
Bellingham only decided a year later to leave his youth club and signed a five-year contract with Borussia until 2025. The transfer fee was 23 million euros.
The England international is now one of the undisputed regular players at BVB. In 57 competitive games he scored six goals and prepared nine goals.
