During the floodlit spectacle in the desert on Sunday, the Dutch Red Bull driver celebrated an unchallenged lights-to-flag victory ahead of his team-mate Sergio Perez from Mexico. Verstappen triumphed for the first time at the Bahrain Grand Prix, it was his 36th Grand Prix victory. Third was surprisingly veteran Fernando Alonso in the Aston Martin.
Shortly before the end of the race, the 41-year-old Spaniard overtook compatriot Carlos Sainz in the Ferrari, who finished fourth. Vice world champion Charles Leclerc retired in third place after a technical problem with his Ferrari. Record world champion Lewis Hamilton, for whom the streak of nine consecutive Bahrain podium finishes ended, ended up fifth, just ahead of Lance Stroll in the second Aston Martin. For Red Bull it was the first double victory in Bahrain, Verstappen won the season opener for the first time. In two weeks (March 19) the second of 23 races of the season is scheduled in Jeddah/Saudi Arabia.
