Missed penalty cost Steyr forward draw against Malta’s champions

After all, the Maltese threw the Northern Irish football club Ballymena United out of the European Cup winners’ Cup. The greatest success of Hamrun Spartans FC in the club’s history was 37 years ago, at least this year the team was again champions in the Premier League on the Mediterranean island. So the test match on Friday evening in the Windischgarstner Dana Stadium was no walk in the park for the forward from Steyr, not only because of the tropical 30 degrees of heat. The eleven from Malta, who are on training camp, already showed the class of a national champion, although this is in the back of the field in the world rankings.

Coach Andreas Milot used all of his newcomers straight away: Thomas Turner in goal and his front men Michael Lageder, Christoph Freitag and Oliver Filip were allowed to play right from the start.

For the spectators there was an open match between two teams at eye level. The first goal celebration had the “Spartans”, who took the lead 1-0 in the 32nd minute. The answer from the SKV was not long in coming. Four minutes later, after assist from Seiwald, Kevin Brandsttter equalized to make it 1-1. The SKV did not bring the draw into the dressing room, because the Maltester added 2: 1 a minute before the break whistle.

The Vorwrts tried with all their strength to turn the game around after the restart and had accordingly good moments. But it stayed with the 1: 2 defeat, which annoys coach Andreas Milot a little: “Except for the result, it was a good test.” Ikenna Ezeala and Amer Habibovic were tested before any signing.
