Kriechmayr wins the final in the Downhill World Cup in Soldeu

He relegated the Tyrolean Romed Baumann, who started for Germany, to second place by 9/100 seconds, his teammate Andreas Sander was third (+0.13 seconds). Daniel Hemetsberger took fourth place (+0.23). For Kriechmayr it was his fourth downhill victory this year after the successes in Gröden, Bormio and Kitzbühel, for the ÖSV men the fifth win of the season. The ten downhill races have thus been split between two athletes, as the other six races in the speed discipline went to Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, who finished sixth in the Pyrenees on Wednesday. The Norwegian had thus secured the small crystal ball ahead of Kriechmayr.

Behind Kriechmayr and Hemetsberger, Otmar Striedinger finished eighth as the third best Austrian (+0.40). The top ten riders were separated by just half a second in a close race. Marco Schwarz finished 16th in what was only his fourth special downhill and thus went away empty-handed in terms of points, since only the top 15 World Cup points make it to the season finale.

Downhill world champion Marco Odermatt did not cope well with the spring snow in Andorra and was only 15th. The Swiss just managed to enjoy 16 points, keeping him on the hunt for the magical 2,000 mark at 1,842 points.

Johann Clarey finished twelfth in his 240th and last World Cup race, so he was denied a win until the end. The 42-year-old Frenchman started with a specially designed helmet – a gift from his team.
