The 30-year-old Spaniard suffered a displaced fracture of the base of the first metacarpal on the thumb of his right hand on Sunday, his racing team Honda announced after an examination in Spain on Monday.

Marquez has already had surgery and will miss the second race of the season in Argentina. Marquez will sit out the Grand Prix at Termas de Rio Hondo on Sunday and will be aiming to return to the US GP in Austin on April 16.

The veteran started from pole position in Portugal and initially fell back a few places. In the early stages, Marquez touched Pramac’s Jorge Martin (Ducati) before boisterously bowling second-placed local hero Miguel Oliveira (Aprilia) off the track.

Marquez then apologized to Oliveira and the fans. “I’m very sorry, I made a big mistake. That wasn’t my intention. I didn’t want to overtake him, my front wheel locked up,” said the Honda driver. Marquez is also expecting a penalty in his next race.
