In terms of sport, things are going rosy at Red Bull Racing: Two one-two wins from the first two races of the season practically mean the maximum yield.
However, clouds are gathering in the background – at least that’s what some media want to notice.
The protagonists are Helmut Marko, the racing team’s motorsport consultant, and Oliver Mintzlaff. The latter has been in charge of the Group’s Formula 1 agenda since the death of Dietrich Mateschitz. However, Marko has not really warmed to his new boss, as can be seen from several statements by the Styrian.
Back in February, Marko told “Speedweek”: “It’s no longer the case that I report by phone after every training session and race. The direct, personal and friendly relationship is no longer there. Didi was a visionary, had emotions. I don’t see it that way anymore.”
It was a first tip against Mintzlaff, who came from football and had previously become known to a wider public as CEO of the German Bundesliga club RB Leipzig.
Is his heart more attached to football?
In Saudi Arabia, Marko followed suit when he couldn’t help himself: “I think Mintzlaff is busy after Manchester anyway.” He alluded to Leipzig’s previous 7-0 defeat in the Champions League against Manchester City. There were repeated accusations that Red Bull’s new Formula 1 boss lacked a heart for motorsport.
“It was a relationship with Mateschitz for 30 years. He was a profound connoisseur of motorsport. There was talk of a completely different level, ”explained Marko in more detail. At the same time, the 79-year-old put it into perspective that this was not possible after two months. “That probably never will be. But that’s no reason to say it doesn’t fit,” Marko continued.
The young relationship has the next test at the weekend at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. Mintzlaff had recently followed the events from the pits. “I can stop at any time if I’m not happy anymore. Just wait and see what the future brings,” Marko said a few weeks ago.
