The former world number one had reached the final by beating his compatriot Karen Khachanov, whom he defeated 7:6 (7:5), 3:6, 6:3.
Sinner had surprisingly beat world number one Carlos Alcaraz 6: 7 (4: 7), 6: 4, 6: 2 in the semifinals. With Alcaraz unable to defend his title in Miami, the Spaniard is now losing the lead in the world rankings again to Serbian Novak Djokovic.
