Tadej Pogacar distanced himself from the classic specialists at the Tour of Flanders on Sunday and secured victory in a superior manner.
Aside from the Slovenian’s triumphant race, the race, which is one of the cycling monuments, was overshadowed by an unusual mass crash.
The starting point was a thoughtless action by Filip Maciejuk: The Pole wanted to overtake the field of riders on the left shoulder. When the paved side strip suddenly led into a small green depression, the young professional, who is under contract with Bahrain Victorious, jerked his handlebars and pulled sharply into the closed field of riders.
While Maciejuk was still catching himself, he triggered a domino effect: one driver after the other was thrown to the ground in the densely packed field, and many of the following could no longer avoid it. Half the field fell, including three-time world champion Peter Sagan and Julian Alaphilippe.
Maciejuk was disqualified for the action by the jury. The 23-year-old apologized via Twitter: “I’m really sorry for my mistake and that I caused the accident.” He hopes that nobody was injured. “It wasn’t supposed to happen, it was a gross misjudgment on my part.”
The following videos show the process from different perspectives:
