Who would have thought? SC Freiburg lived up to its reputation as a “giant slayer” and kicked none other than the German record champions FC Bayern out of the DFB Cup in their Allianz Arena fortress.
The people of Breisgau won 2:1 (1:1) in front of 75,000 spectators and advanced to the semifinals. Eintracht Frankfurt is also there, Oliver Glasner’s team kept the upper hand against Union Berlin after a double strike by Randal Kolo Muani within 93 seconds (11th, 13th) 2-0 (0-0).
For Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel, the dream of a treble, about which he had previously philosophized offensively, burst after his second competitive game in the service of Munich. This setback was not to be expected after the 4:2 gala against Dortmund on Saturday.
But Freiburg played with heart and showed themselves unimpressed by the unfortunate 1-0 deficit – Dayot Upamecano went into the header duel with Maximilian Eggestein very impetuously (19th).
“This result raises anger”
The team around ÖFB team striker Michael Gregoritsch reported back – and how. Nicolas Höfler scored in the 27th minute with a placed long-range shot to make it 1-1. When everything pointed to extra time, Jamal Musiala blocked the ball with his arm in the penalty area, referee Harm Osmers didn’t hesitate for a second and awarded the penalty. Lucas Höler kept his nerve in the 95th minute and chased the ball under the crossbar.
“There isn’t much nicer in the cup – unbelievable. That definitely sticks,” said Eggestein. The Bavarians were superior (67:33 percent possession), but only rarely – as with a crossbar header from Benjamin Pavard (62nd) – really dangerous.
“It’s very bitter. We didn’t play a bad game, but there’s anger with this result. That certain something was missing,” analyzed Thomas Müller.
