Haller and Malen get BVB on course in Stuttgart before the break. In the second round it will be a wild game. Silas shocked Dortmund in the seventh minute of added time.
Despite a long majority, Borussia Dortmund missed a big step in the Bundesliga title race. In a turbulent game with two goals in injury time at VfB Stuttgart, who were in danger of relegation, the second-placed team had to settle for a 3-3 (2-0) win against the Swabians, despite leading twice and being sent off.
With the remaining six matchdays to go, BVB are two points behind leaders FC Bayern Munich. VfB remained unbeaten in their third competitive game under their new coach Sebastian Hoeneß and is ranked 16th in the relegation zone.
Offensive forces Sébastien Haller (26th minute) and Donyell Malen (33rd) scored in front of 47,900 spectators for BVB, who were very efficient in the first round. Tanguy Coulibaly (78′) and Josha Vagnoman (84′) brought the bravely fighting Stuttgarters, where defender Konstantinos Mavropanos saw the yellow-red card (39′), the equalizer. Substitute Giovanni Reyna (90+3) gave Dortmund the lead again, but Silas struck back for VfB in the seventh minute of added time.
After a confused initial phase and a good first Stuttgart chance through Vagnoman (5th), BVB took control, but initially only seldom became a threat. VfB keeper Fabian Bredlow only had to parry Haller and then Julian Brandt in the tenth minute. The Dortmund defence, in which Emre Can replaced the ailing Niklas Süle, kept busy. Once Mats Hummels clarified something unconventional about his own goal.
Then the Black and Yellows struck ice cold twice within seven minutes. Haller was quicker to cross than ex-Dortmunder Dan-Axel Zagadou, who played for Hiroki Ito, who was absent due to illness, at VfB. The Ivorian international slammed the ball from close range to the underside of the bar, from where it bounced into the goal. A short time later, the hosts did not get a Dortmund corner kick cleared – Malen took a shot from around 15 meters and increased to 2-0. The Dutchman scored in the fourth league game in a row.
Between the two Dortmund goals, Serhou Guirassy had missed the great opportunity to equalize (30th) and Mavropanos saw a yellow card, which was to have consequences. Just four minutes after his foul on Karim Adeyemi, the Greek also knocked the lively Malen off his feet – and rightly flew off the field. So at the break Borussia were on course for victory.
Dortmund’s defense chief Hummels stayed in the dressing room – probably battered – and was replaced by Soumaila Coulibaly. Midfield ace Jude Bellingham shortly after the restart (50th) and substitute BVB captain Marco Reus (78th) hit the bar.
However, VfB remained courageous even when outnumbered – and rewarded themselves. Guirassy’s supposed connection goal (52nd) was disallowed after the video assistant intervened because of an offside position, but the goal from Stuttgart’s Coulibaly then counted. Can had deflected the Frenchman’s shot into an untenable path for Dortmund goalkeeper Kobel. The game slipped away from the guests. Joker Reyna provided the supposed Dortmund redemption in injury time, then Silas scored on the other side.
