After the last four defeats in a row, the Rhein-Neckar Löwen are in great form in the first semi-final of the Final4 for the German Handball Cup against SG Flensburg-Handewitt.
The Rhein-Neckar Löwen are in the final of the German Handball Cup for the fifth time and can dream of their second triumph after 2018.
In front of 20,000 fans in Cologne, Mannheim surprisingly won the semi-final against SG Flensburg-Handewitt with 38:31 (19:11) and will meet the winner of the second semi-final between SC Magdeburg and TBV Lemgo Lippe on Sunday. The best thrower for the winner was national player Juri Knorr with ten goals, and Mads Mensah Larsen also scored ten times for SG.
The duel between Flensburg, fourth in the Bundesliga, and Mannheim, fifth in the table, was hard fought from the start. Neither team was able to break away at first. In the middle of the first half, the lions then increased and after 20 minutes they created a three-goal cushion at 12:9 for the first time, which even increased to six goals by the break.
The German champion of 2016 and 2017, who had recently suffered four Bundesliga defeats in a row, had to do without his sick captain and best field goalscorer of the season, Patrick Groetzki. The backcourt players Niclas Kirkelökke and Albin Lagergren alternated on the right wing position for him.
The Flensburg team, unbeaten in 21 competitive games before, found no means against the team of coach Sebastian Hinze, who presented themselves in much improved form compared to the recent series of bankruptcies. In the seventh semi-final duel between the two teams, the lions triumphed for the first time.
