England are one step ahead of their first European Championship win. In Spain, the Three Lions’ success is not well received.
Will England be preferred at EURO 2021? The Spanish press has made stern accusations after the Three Lions win in extra time against Denmark in the semi-finals.
“For me this is the most shameful competition we have ever attended. It is ridiculous,” said Spanish journalist Roberto Morales (EFE) in the show “El Chiringuito” moderated by Josep Pedrero.
EM 2021: England thanks to controversial penalties in the final
In the opinion of the journalist, the European Championship was “completely designed” so that England would ultimately be the winner. He gave several reasons for this.
On the one hand, England were allowed to play all but one of their games at their home country Wembley, and on the other hand, they were helped in the semi-finals against Denmark. “All that was missing was the help they got with that penalty in a difficult game,” said Morales.
He also complained that games were being played in cities that were “in no way European” and that the final was “being prepared for a country that has left the EU”.
In the extension of the European Championship semi-finals, England was awarded a controversial penalty after a foul on Raheem Sterling. Harry Kane converted in the pursuit and shot England into the final.
England at Euro 2021: “It’s a shame”
Also the Spanish one Brand formulated some allegations towards England in its Thursday edition.
“English football can stop giving lectures on swallows to the rest of the continent. This would not be part of real English football, they say – only in the semi-finals of the European Championship,” the paper wrote.
He went on: “This mistake was so obvious that it made England’s progress seem strange. Remember that they played six out of seven games at Wembley. It’s a shame as this devalues one of the best European championships of all time.”
England will face Italy at their home stadium on Sunday (9 p.m.).
