Leader St. Pölten’s 2-0 win over Admira yesterday put FC Blau-Weiss Linz under double pressure ahead of today’s home game against Dornbirn. Coach Gerald Scheiblehner’s team showed strong nerves in the fight for promotion, followed suit with a 1-0 home win and is still one point behind the leaders from Lower Austria.
Linz, where Matthias Seidl celebrated his comeback, should have taken the lead after just four minutes: striker Ronivaldo initially failed with a header at guest goalie Raphael Zwischenbrugger, and the Brazilian also missed the follow-up shot. The home side were lucky in the seventh minute: Manuel Maranda had carelessly lost the ball, Dornbirn striker Balotelli failed alone in front of BW keeper Nicolas Schmid. Lukas Tursch was also close: A header from the defender who had moved up was cleared by Zwischenbrugger (28′) with a top reflex for a corner.
14th goal for Ronivaldo
After the goalless first half, Linz increased the tempo again in the second half: In the 51st minute, Ronivaldo missed another chance, but a few minutes later the ball wriggled in the net: Dornbirn’s keeper was unable to hold a shot by Fally Mayulu , Ronivaldo pushed the ball over the line and let the Scheiblehner team celebrate the 1-0 lead (62nd). It was the 14th goal of the season for the 34-year-old – and his ninth goal in spring.
The home team’s victory could have been even better: Substitute Paul Mensah failed in the finish with a volley on the crossbar (84th). In stoppage time, Ronivaldo, who scored the gold goal, also missed the premature decision.
With the complete success, Blau-Weiss stays in the title race: The gap to leader of the table St. Pölten is still only one point. In the coming round, the next trend-setting game for Linz is on the program: On Friday, Blau-Weiss is a guest at the third GAK (8:30 p.m.)
