Lionel Messi continues to reap awards: he received three recognitions from the IFFHS

The captain of the Argentine National Team thus surpassed his own record as the player most awarded by that entity, since he has 13 trophies since 2011.

Lionel Messi received three new and important recognitions from the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS). The captain of the Argentine National Team thus surpassed his own record as the player most awarded by that entity, since he has 13 trophies since 2011.

“It was an honor to receive from the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) these three awards for 2022: IFFHS WORLD’S BEST PLAYER, IFFHS WORLD’S BEST PLAYMAKER and IFFHS WORLD’S BEST INTERNATIONAL GOAL SCORER. Thank you!!!”Messi posted on his social networks. The ceremony was held last Thursday in Paris.

The captain of the Argentine National Team published a photo this Sunday where he can be seen posing with the three awards: Best Player, Best Playmaker and Best International Scorer. They all correspond to the 2022 season and, although they had been announced at the beginning of the year, they were just delivered to Rosario in the last few hours.

IFFHS statistics, which are separate from FIFA statistics, take into account goals scored and national and international performances. Messi was chosen as the best footballer of last year, followed by Kylian Mbappé, Karim Benzema, Luka Modric and Erling Haaland.

The IFFHS created the Best Player of the Year Award in 1988. Marco Van Basten won it in 1988 and 1989, Lothar Matthaus did it in 1990, but after that award the FIFA president, at that time the Swiss Joshep Blatter, asked the entity that stopped delivering the award. Since 2020 he decided to award the Best Footballer of the Year again and Robert Lewandowski was the winner of the 2020 and 2021 awards.

The IFFHS, based in Lausanne (Switzerland), is an institution recognized by FIFA because it receives logistical support from the body and its accredited members, and has exclusive access to the archives of the highest body in world football.
