Michael Gspurning succeeds Robert Almer as goalkeeping coach in the Austrian national soccer team. The 41-year-old has been a goalie coach at German Bundesliga club Union Berlin since 2017 and will continue to do so in the future. However, he will take care of Heinz Lindner, Alexander Schlager and Co. when it comes to international matches.
Gspurning also worked in Greece and the USA during his active career, which ended in 2017 at Union Berlin. Gspurning, who once also played for FC Pasching, kept goal for the ÖFB team three times in 2008 and 2009. “We managed to sign Michael Gspurning, a modern goalkeeping coach who has international experience. That’s a great solution for us,” said ÖFB team boss Ralf Rangnick.
According to Peter Schöttel, a “very experienced specialist” was recruited for this position. “We would like to thank 1. FC Union Berlin for the constructive discussions and the opportunity to carry out these activities at the same time. This results in valuable synergies for everyone,” said the ÖFB sports director.
Gspurning himself can hardly wait to return to the circle of the ÖFB team. “I’m looking forward to working with the team and the coaching team. Especially the qualifiers for the European Championship, which will take place in Germany next year,” said the native of Styria. Gspurning’s predecessor Almer announced at the end of March that he wanted to reorient himself professionally.
