“I mean that politely – Erling Haaland is a freak,” said English striker legend Alan Shearer to the BBC after the Norwegian’s 50th goal of the season, emphasizing: “If you could paint a centre-forward, he would look something like him.”
Haaland scored his 34th goal (3rd) in the 32nd league game in the 2-1 (2-1) win of defending champions Manchester City at Fulham on Sunday. He joined record holders Andy Cole (1993/94) and Shearer (1994/95), who each needed 42 season games.
Last 92 years ago
The last time a top-flight player in England scored 50 goals in all competitions was 92 years ago. Tom “Pongo” Waring reached this mark in 1930/31 for Aston Villa. City team manager Pep Guardiola was also “very impressed” by Haaland and, after jumping to the top of the table, praised the “strong mentality” of the 22-year-old when he took the penalty kick to take the lead.
Incidentally, the British record is 63 goals. The legendary Dixie Dean fielded him for Everton FC in 1927/28. Haaland still has up to ten games of the season to break the record
