Hanfmann, who slipped into the main draw as a qualifier, won 6:4, 6:1 against the ninth seeded American Taylor Fritz. The 31-year-old from Karlsruhe, who is currently only number 101 in the world rankings, was quickly 0:3 behind, but then won in just 71 minutes. Hanfmann now meets the Italian Marco Checchinato.
