Murals, statues and the protection of his birthplace: tributes to Maradona

“Declare a National Historic Site to the Birthplace of Diego Armando Maradona, located at Calle Azamor No. 523 of the City of Villa Fiorito, Lomas de Zamora District, Province of Buenos Aires”, says Decree 733, signed by President Alberto Fernández.

The request to declare the house as a National Historic Site had been raised to the president by the National Commission of Monuments, Places and Historical Assets of the Ministry of Culture of the Nation, a few days after Maradona’s death, in November 2020 .

Diego Maradona’s birthplace was declared a National Historic Site.

“The enormous influence of the odd footballer in Argentine popular culture transcends his sporting merits and constitutes him, in the light of his recent death, as one of the most recognizable symbols of our identity,” justifies the decree.

Meanwhile, today, the day that Maradona would turn 61, a 13-meter-high monument was discovered in Santa Clara del Mar, designed by the plastic artist Sebastián Martino, for the event called “The greatest to the greatest.”

The work is located in the main square of the city and can be seen from the beach.

The monument is made of various materials: corten steel (face), stainless steel tubes (ball) and a concrete for the monolith that supports it.

Lionel Messi, captain of the Argentine national team, spearheaded the inauguration of an imposing statue of Diego Maradona, five meters high and two tons in weight, in one of the entrances to the Unique Mother of Cities Stadium in Santiago del Estero.

In the preview of the match played on June 3 by the Argentine National Team and Chile for the South American Qualifiers for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, Messi along with the rest of the squad and the president of AFA, Claudio Tapia, participated in the act where the statue was discovered in tribute to Maradona.

The statue was made by the Cordovan sculptor Carlos Benavídez, based in Buenos Aires, who told Télam that the work was made “entirely in bronze with the intention of paying homage to the ‘Great Captain’ of the Argentine National Team”.

“At the end of December I was commissioned and it has been a pleasure, as well as being here in Santiago that I did not know. I had never come, I fell in love with the people, with their warmth”, said Benavídez, a plastic artist recognized nationally and internationally for his sculptural works of figurative expressionist style.

Since Maradona’s death, on November 25, 2020, there have been hundreds of tributes to the eternal idol throughout the world. Streets, murals, names of squares, monuments on courts all over the planet. The love for “Fluff” will surely never be extinguished.
