Timo Hildebrand keeps his fingers crossed for VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga relegation battle. He has a clear opinion on the Swabians’ past coaching decision.
Former national soccer goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand thinks Sebastian Hoeneß at VfB Stuttgart is “absolutely” the right coach in the great relegation crisis.
“I think VfB has made a really positive development since the change of coach. I hope that the boys can do that again in the next two games,” said the 44-year-old former Swabian goalkeeper of the German Press Agency. “It will definitely be exciting until the end,” he predicted.
Risk of relegation
Before the final two games of the season in the Bundesliga, Stuttgart are in the penultimate place in the table and thus in a direct relegation zone. In the remaining games at FSV Mainz 05 on Sunday and the following weekend against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, VfB is threatened with relegation for the third time since 2016.
“I’ve been worried all season. The change of coach came too late,” said Hildebrand. Bruno Labbadia’s commitment was “a wrong decision”, he said. “We don’t need to argue that away.”
In December, Labbadia succeeded Pellegrino Matarazzo, who was released in October, and interim coach Michael Wimmer. Hoeneß, in turn, replaced Labbadia in early April. In the worst case, the relegation of VfB Stuttgart could already be sealed on Sunday with the success of the competitors TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, VfL Bochum and FC Schalke 04. “I hope and wish that VfB will stay in,” said Hildebrand.
