There will probably not be a catch-up date this year for the canceled Formula 1 race in Imola. Therefore, the organizers have another solution in mind.
After the cancellation of the Grand Prix in Imola due to the consequences of severe storms, the organizers are hoping for a one-year extension of their Formula 1 contract.
“Given the complexity of the calendar, it’s safe to assume that the 2023 edition will take place in 2026. But for the moment, that’s certainly not a priority,” said Italian Automobile Federation President Angelo Sticchi Damiani. The current contract for racing at Imola runs up to and including 2025.
The Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix scheduled for Sunday was canceled due to the consequences of heavy rain and flooding in the region. It is hardly likely that the race will be made up for this year. The calendar is packed, and the teams are unlikely to agree to a shortened summer break.
F1 boss hails from Imola
Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali also said it would be “difficult” to drive again in Imola this season. An extension of the contract with the organizers is therefore “an option that is on the table,” said the managing director of the racing series. The 58-year-old comes from Imola himself, so the Grand Prix is particularly important to him.
160,000 spectators were expected at the race weekend this year. The cancellation was inevitable given the dramatic situation in the region, said association boss Sticchi Damiani. The area on the Adriatic coast has been hit by severe storms since Tuesday. At least eight people were killed.
