The two-time Formula 1 champion, Max Verstappen, today achieved “pole position” for the Monaco Grand Prix, in which his teammate in the Red Bull team, the Mexican Sergio “Checo” Pérez, will start last due to an accident during the first qualifying round.

The Dutchman, leader of the season, achieved his fourth pole position of the year, the first in his history on the Monte Carlo street circuit, with 84 thousandths of a second over the Spanish Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin).

From the first starting position, Verstappen will try tomorrow to achieve a new victory that extends his advantage at the head of the general positions, which he leads with 119 points, above “Checo” Pérez (105) and Alonso (75).

In the second row of the grid will start the Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and the Frenchman Esteban Ocon (Alpine) and further back the Spanish Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) and the British Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes).

The top ten positions were completed by Frenchman Pierre Gasly (Alpine), British George Russell (Mercedes), Japanese Yuki Tsunoda (AlphaTauri) and British Lando Norris (McLaren).

“Checo” Pérez was out of competition when he crashed into a wall in the first round of the qualifying session (Q1), which caused damage to his RB19 car.

From the last starting position, the Mexican will have a difficult mission to repeat last year’s victory on the urban circuit of the principality. The race, valid for the seventh date, will be held this Sunday from 10:00 a.m. with a Star+ broadcast.

Red Bull won all five events this year, as the Emilia-Romagna GP in Italy was suspended last weekend due to flooding at the site.
