Overwhelmed by his emotions, Edin Terzic cried uncontrollably. In front of the gigantic south stand of the most loyal BVB fans, the Borussia Dortmund coach patted his heart with his right hand and wiped the tears from his face.
The dramatically missed championship title triggered deep sadness in the 40-year-old and in an entire football region. Again not BVB, again FC Bayern: Dortmund couldn’t believe it.
“You can see how hard and how tough this sport, which we fell in love with, can be,” said Terzic. “There was no happy ending for us this season. It hurts extremely.” The coach, who was chanted by Borussia supporters, added: “In terms of sport, it was the most difficult and bitter thing you can imagine.”

His players felt the same way, struggling for words in front of the microphones. Midfield driver Emre Can said on the Sky pay TV channel: “It just wasn’t supposed to be. “It shows what great fans we have, what a great club we are,” said veteran Mats Hummels. “But, to be honest, we wanted to celebrate together here today. That’s only minimal consolation.” Even in the packed city, euphoria turned to deep disappointment. Instead of becoming the biggest party mile, the center of Dortmund became a sea of mourners.
A big party with a car parade and an entry in the Golden Book had already been planned for Pentecost Sunday. Everything was set for the ninth championship title in the club’s history. As a BVB fan with a high identification factor, Terzic would have been a worthy successor to Jürgen Klopp as Dortmund’s master coach. Now he had to congratulate Bayern and did it fairly. “It’s the most honest title you can win when you’re up there after 34 games,” said Terzic.
“Everything feels very empty. However, I know that tomorrow is a new day, tomorrow will continue. Before that, the Dortmunders have to digest what they have experienced. The contrast between the hoped-for triumph and the annoyance now experienced could hardly be greater. “The next few days will be brutal,” said Hummels. I’m actually someone who then wants to be very much on my own. But let’s see. It’s going to be difficult to process. It’s going to take more than a few days.”
