Handball: Berlin and Granollers in the final of the European League

Füchse Berlin win their semi-final against Montpellier, Granollers also eliminates Göppingen after Flensburg. Will there be the 26th German triumph in the second most important European Cup on Sunday?

BM Granollers and Füchse Berlin are in the final of the Handball European League. The Spaniards won the semifinals of the Final Four in Flensburg against Frisch Auf Göppingen 31:29 (16:18). The Berliners had previously won 35:29 (16:16) against the French representative Montpellier HB. The final will take place on Sunday (6 p.m./DAZN) in the campus hall. Before that (3.30 p.m. / DAZN) the game for third place will be played.

The Berliners, who had already won the EHF Cup in 2015 and 2018 as the predecessor of the European League, only really got going after the change of sides. Coach Jaron Siewert’s team pulled away from 19:18 (33rd) to 25:19 (42nd). Goalkeeper Dejan Milosavljev played a major role in this phase. In the end, the Serb had eleven saves to his credit. The best thrower from the capitals was Bundesliga record shooter Hans Lindberg with eight goals.

“The result in the first half was better than our game,” admitted Siewert at the press conference. The 29-year-old added: “We need to win one more game tomorrow to make this a great weekend.”

Goeppingen loses

In the second semi-final, Göppingen had the better start, but the Catalans, who had blocked SG Flensburg-Handewitt from the finals at home, were unimpressed throughout the game. Mainly thanks to a strong final phase, Granollers deservedly prevailed. “I would like to apologize to our fans,” said the disappointed fresh-up Kresimir Kozina: “It was our fault. We missed too many chances.”

Should the Berliners win the final on Sunday, it would be the 26th success of a German team in the 41st edition of the competition. If the foxes win, the sixth in the Bundesliga final table can also have hopes of a starting place in the European League next season.
