The 35-year-old joins the Germany SailGP Team as a co-owner in sailing. Vettel and the entrepreneur and racing team owner Thomas Riedel presented their project on Wednesday at the SpoBis sports congress in Düsseldorf.
“I’m taking part because the sports format offers extremely fast and highly exciting races,” said Vettel: “The boats are only driven by the wind.”
The ex-racer praised the sustainable approach of the sailing series and the climate-positive measures of the projects. Vettel had repeatedly campaigned for environmental and climate protection at the end of his Formula 1 career.
The helmsman of the sailing crew is the German Erik Heil, who won bronze medals in the 49er at the 2016 and 2021 Olympics. The SailGP Grand Prix series was developed by the five-time America’s Cup winner Russell Coutts, among others. It is sailed on high-tech F50 catamarans. The fourth SailGP season starts on June 16 off Chicago. The winners win one million dollars in prize money.
