Tennis: Zverev hopes for a German duel: I’m a “Daniel Altmaier fan”

Two German tennis professionals are still in singles at the French Open. And with one more win each, they would meet. Alexander Zverev is feverish with his colleague – until Monday.

After moving into the third round at the French Open, Alexander Zverev is hoping for a German duel with Daniel Altmaier in the round of 16. “We would both be very happy to play the fourth round against each other here at Roland Garros,” said the Olympic tennis champion late Thursday evening in Paris. “It would be an amazing experience for him and it would also be great for me to play against another German in a Grand Slam.”

Zverev had previously defeated Slovakian Alex Molcan 6: 4, 6: 2, 6: 1 and now meets American Frances Tiafoe. Altmaier had caused a sensation with the five-set victory in more than five hours over the Italian Jannik Sinner, he had to deal with the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrow in the third round.

“If we both win the third round, we would both be pretty happy about it and so would everyone else,” said Zverev. “I was a huge Daniel Altmaier fan today and will also be a huge Daniel Altmaier fan on Friday – and then hopefully not next Monday.” A potential round of 16 would rise on Monday.

“It’s a perfect return”

With the win against Molkan, Zverev also mastered his return to the accident site of the previous year. In the largest stadium at the clay court classic in Paris, the Court Philippe-Chatrier, he injured his ankle in the semifinals against Rafael Nadal almost a year ago.

“I was nervous before the match, restless, but I used it positively,” reported the former world number two. He went onto the pitch before the game, “just to see him again. I’m happy with how everything went and I had fun too. It’s a perfect return, hopefully it will continue like this.”
