Jessica Pegula, third in the world tennis rankings, failed in the third round of the French Open.
The 29-year-old American lost 6-1, 6-3 to Belgian Elise Mertens in 82 minutes at the clay court classic in Paris. Pegula is the fourth player out of the top ten on the seeding list. She is still waiting for a semi-final in one of the four Grand Slam tournaments.
Co-favorite Aryna Sabalenka, on the other hand, again showed a sovereign performance. The second in the world rankings from Belarus easily defeated the Russian Kamilla Rachimova 6:2, 6:2 and made it into the round of 16. The Australian Open winner is next to the top seeded Iga Swiatek from Poland, the biggest contender for the title at the Stade Roland Garros.
