With around 35,000 fans, the final of the Champions League between the Wolfsburg footballers and Barcelona will be sold out. In Eindhoven, VfL can’t just rely on their own fans.
For Wolfsburg’s defender Dominique Janssen, the Champions League final in Eindhoven’s Philips Stadium is not only a very special football game because of the chance for the title.
“I remember watching my first professional game in this stadium,” said the Dutch international, who grew up just under 50 kilometers west of Eindhoven, at the press conference before the final in the afternoon (4 p.m. / ZDF and DAZN) against FC Barcelona. “If you really wanted to go to a city, you went to Eindhoven.”
Janssen revealed that she would be supported by her family in the final. “It’s maybe one of the most important games of my career.” In addition to Janssen, the players Jill Roord and Lynn Wilms can also hope for an Oranje bonus in their home country. “But I also think that Barcelona is a big club in the Netherlands where a lot of Dutch players have played,” said Janssen. It is therefore difficult to say whether the neutral fans are more in favor of Wolfsburg or Barcelona.
Stadium in Eindhoven is sold out
There are no players from the Netherlands in the Spaniards’ squad, but around 8,000 Barça fans will support their team in Eindhoven. VfL sold 4629 tickets. With around 35,000 spectators, the Philips Stadium will be sold out.
Wolfsburg coach Tommy Stroot knows the final venue well. From 2016 to 2021 he coached the players of FC Twente Enschede, with whom he celebrated the championship in 2019 and 2021 and won the cup once. Appropriately, Stroot, whose mother is from the Netherlands, last coached his ex-club at a league game at Eindhoven’s Philips Stadium. The PSV players should have stood guard for champions Enschede back then, “I’ve had a lot of positive experiences here,” said the coach.
For VfL, the Champions League is about the third title after 2013 and 2014. FC Barcelona only won the most important competition in European club football in 2021, but is considered the favorite in the final.
