Nico Hulkenberg made it way up in Formula 1 practice in Barcelona. The only German in the field remains calm after the surprise.
Nico Hülkenberg does not want to overstate his surprising third place in Formula 1 practice in Barcelona. “We have to stay cool and realistic,” said the 35-year-old ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix.
On Friday he finished third in the second practice session behind world champion Max Verstappen in the Red Bull and third-placed Fernando Alonso in the Aston Martin. In the Haas racing car, which was actually inferior, the only remaining German in the field caused amazement.
Hülkenberg’s explanation: The competition had gone below their potential. For qualifying in the afternoon (4 p.m. / Sky), the Rhinelander does not expect this top result to be repeated. But it was much more important for him that confidence in his company car returned: “It felt good, especially on this lap with the new soft tires, you have a lot of grip for a whole lap,” said Hulkenberg. It was probably possible to get the best out of the car, but that hadn’t always worked in the end. Last Sunday he was only 17th in Monaco.
“I hope that we can continue like this for the next two days. There is always more to discover, there is always more to do,” said veteran Hulkenberg. In the Grand Prix on Sunday he could score World Championship points for the second time this season. In the previous World Championship races, he had only managed to do so in seventh place in Australia.
