The 36-year-old defeated Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas 6:3,6:2,6:2 in the round of 16 on Sunday and thus reached the quarterfinals in Paris for the 17th time. He did this more often than any other professional at the clay court classic. So far he had shared this record with Rafael Nadal, who was absent this time. Djokovic’s next opponent is Russian Karen Chatschanov.
Djokovic can continue to hope for his 23rd title in a Grand Slam tournament, which would leave the Spaniard behind. Against Varillas he needed 1:57 hours to win, in the course of the tournament the “Djoker” continued without losing a set. Since 2010 he has consistently reached at least the top eight at the Stade Roland Garros.
The 27-year-old Khachanov defeated Lorenzo Sonego of Italy 1:6,6:4,7:6(7),6:1. At the US Open and Australian Open, the eleventh in the world rankings had recently reached the semifinals.
The other two men’s rounds of 16 on Sunday will be contested by the top seeded Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz against the Italian Lorenzo Musetti (No. 17) and the Styrian Sebastian Ofner against the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas (5). The women’s game before that started at 5 p.m.
