French Open: Zverev on semi-final opponent Ruud: “Solid tennis player”

Alexander Zverev meets Casper Ruud in the semifinals of the French Open. The Norwegian reached the final last year but is still waiting for the same success as Zverev.

Alexander Zverev goes into the duel at the French Open with respect for the experience of his semi-final opponent Casper Ruud. “Casper has been in this situation before, he was in the final here last year, he knows exactly what to do,” said the Olympic tennis champion about the 24-year-old Norwegian. “He’s a very, very good tennis player, a very solid tennis player.”

Zverev had reached his third semi-final in a row at the clay court classic in Paris by beating Argentinian outsider Tomás Martin Etcheverry 6: 4, 3: 6, 6: 3, 6: 4. Ruud then surprisingly defeated the Dane Holger Rune in the Scandinavian quarter-final duel 6:1, 6:2, 3:6, 6:3.

“It’s great to see him in the semifinals again,” Ruud said of Zverev. The fact that he seriously injured his ankle against Rafael Nadal in the 2022 semifinals is “very regrettable”. In the final a year ago, Ruud clearly lost in three sets against Paris record winner Nadal. After that, the Norwegian also lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the US Open and, like Zverev, is still waiting for his first Grand Slam triumph.

“It will be a great match,” said Ruud, looking ahead to the semifinals against Zverev. The other semi-final is contested by top favorites Alcaraz from Spain and 22-time Grand Slam tournament winner Novak Djokovic from Serbia.
