Tennis: Muchova surprisingly reaches the final of the French Open

Outsider Karolina Muchova creates the next surprise at the French Open and ends Aryna Sabalenka’s title dream. The Belarusian was on the verge of success.

The Czech Karolina Muchova continued her surprising run of success at the French Open against the favored Aryna Sabalenka and fought her way into the final for the first time. The 26-year-old won a high-class semi-final 7: 6 (7: 5), 6: 7 (5: 7), 7: 5 against Belarus, second in the world tennis rankings.

Muchova put up a lot of effort against Sabalenka’s powerful attacking game to win in 3:13 hours. She came back in the third set after being 5-2 behind, fended off a match point and won five games in a row.

Final against Swiatek or Haddad Maia

Previously the world number 43. Muchova never got past the third round at the French Open, and at the Australian Open in 2021 she was also in the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament. The unseeded Muchova now meets the winner of the game between the top seeded defending champion Iga Swiatek from Poland and the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia.

Australian Open winner Sabalenka missed her first final at the French Open. The debate about their attitude to the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine and the Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko had repeatedly led to controversy during the tournament. At times she did not give a press conference, then distanced herself from Lukashenko and repeatedly stated that she did not support the war.
