Georginio Wijnaldum joins PSG from Liverpool FC. The Dutchman also had other attractive options, including FC Bayern.
The advisor to still-Liverpool professional Georginio Wijnaldum has confirmed that Bayern Munich, among others, put out feelers for the midfielder. Wijnaldum ultimately decided on a free transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, where he signed a three-year contract effective July 1.
“It started relatively early, with Inter Milan showing interest in January,” Humphry Nijman told im Here We Go Podcast to the decision-making process about the future of his client. However, financial hurdles would not have made it possible for Inter to compete intensely for Wijnaldum, “shortly afterwards the sports director of Juventus Turin called me and also signaled interest,” said Nijman.
Bayern interest in Wijnaldum: race between Barca and PSG
“It was around the same time that PSG sporting director Leonardo first contacted me,” added Nijman. “We also knew that Ronald Koeman wanted to bring Georginio to Barcelona. And at a later point in time, Bayern Munich also showed interest.”
Liverpool have also made an offer to Wijnaldum to extend his contract, which expires on June 30, but the 30-year-old Dutch international decided against it. In the end it was a duel between Barca and Paris, Nijman explained: “Pochettino (PSG coach, d. Ed.) Had a few conversations with Gini and explained what he expected from him and what role he saw him Barcelona looked very good in the beginning and we were on the right track, but Paris made it clear to us that their interest is really very serious. When both offers were on the table, he had to make a decision. ”
Wijnaldum moved from Newcastle United to Liverpool in 2016 and played a total of 237 competitive games for the English. He also won the Champions League in 2019 with coach Jürgen Klopp’s team and the English championship in 2020.
Wijnaldum is currently playing with the Netherlands at the European Championship and as captain led the Elftal to two wins in the first two group games (3-2 against Ukraine, 2-0 against Austria). Oranje is already in the round of 16 ahead of schedule.
