Boredom threatens early on in the Formula 1 title race. Max Verstappen and Red Bull are clearly superior. Are the bosses of the racing series changing the rules without further ado?
Despite the sporting dominance of Max Verstappen’s Red Bull team, the Formula 1 leadership excludes short-term intervention in the rules for more excitement in the title race.
“That’s not correct because we can’t be seen as part of a manipulation. That’s not right and it’s not fair either,” said Formula 1 Managing Director Stefano Domenicali in a podcast of the racing series before the Montreal Grand Prix on Sunday. He could not imagine such an approach at all, added the former Ferrari team boss.
Verstappen leads with 53 points
Defending champion Verstappen is already leading the overall standings with a 53-point lead over team-mate Sergio Perez before the eighth round of the season. The Dutchman has won five races this year, Perez the other two. Across the seasons, one of the two Red Bull drivers has won 17 of the past 18 World Championship races.
Formula 1 boss Domenicali still sees it as the best way to keep the rules constant. This would give Red Bull’s competitors a chance to catch up on the technical lead. “It will definitely happen,” said the Italian.
In the premier class there have always been phases in which one racing team was superior. “Our goal, if you take a strategic approach, should be that these cycles are shorter in the future,” said Domenicali. While Red Bull have done an incredible job, “we have to act prudently because we know things can change very quickly in life,” added the 58-year-old.
