Mick Schumacher was allowed to test the Mercedes on the track for the first time before the Formula 1 Grand Prix on Sunday in Montreal (8 p.m., live on ServusTV). In his role as reserve driver for the Silver Arrows, the German continues to collect diligence points from team boss Toto Wolff. “Mick has already become a valuable member of the team,” said Wolff ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix.

The Austrian referred to Schumacher’s assignments in the team’s racing simulator. The 24-year-old’s work “proved useful to improve our lap times,” assured Wolff. The two regular Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell had recently expressly emphasized Schumacher’s part in the upswing of the Silver Arrows after second and third place in the race in Barcelona.

The son of record world champion Michael Schumacher “did a great job” that helped the team “get on the right track,” said Hamilton. Russell praised the fact that Schumacher and the simulator team worked well past midnight setting up the cars ahead of qualifying in Barcelona. “In the simulator I can feel and filter out what works,” says Schumacher.

After two years as a pilot with Haas, his contract with the US team had not been renewed. Therefore, the young star signed with Mercedes as a test and reserve driver. In the meantime, however, there are already two offers for 2024.

Will the rain be a factor?

Despite the sporting dominance of Red Bull and world champion Max Verstappen, the Formula 1 leadership excludes short-term intervention in the rules for more excitement in the title race. “Because we must not be seen as part of a manipulation. That is not right and not fair,” said F1 Managing Director Stefano Domenicali yesterday. The 100th victory in Red Bull’s Formula 1 history can probably only be prevented by a possible rain chaos on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve at the weekend.
