For now he does not return: Gallardo rejected Olympique de Marseille

Coach Marcelo Gallardo rejected this Saturday the proposal of the Olympic Marseille and will continue to wait for a new offer to make the leap to European football, after his long and successful cycle in River.

The French club had already made him a formal offer to be in charge of the professional squad, after the departure of Croatian Igor Tudor.

Marseille, who finished third in Ligue 1 and will have to play a playoff phase to enter the 2023-2024 Champions League, had him as their main candidate and negotiations were very advanced for his arrival to take place. However, Gallardo dismissed the proposal.

The former River coach, after touring Europe, surprised everyone by attending the River Camp this Saturday to see another of his sons in the minor divisions of the Nuñez club.

After Gallardo’s refusal, the French club has two other candidates on file to fill the position left by Tudor.

The first on the list is Paulo Fonseca, who is currently the manager of Lille. With the Doges, Fonseca finished fifth in the French league with 67 points and qualified for the Conference League.

Another of the candidates is Marcelino García Toral, who is currently without work since his departure from Athletic Bilbao in May 2022. The Asturian coach, who was champion of the Copa del Rey with Valencia, was also a candidate to lead the Spanish National Team after the departure of Luis Enrique, but finally the Federation was defined by Luis de la Fuente.
