Two stars of German athletics give hope for a good World Cup season when they appear in Dessau. Mihambo has a “good feeling”, Lückenkemper announces a “mega-crass year”.
After her illness-related break at the start of the season, Malaika Mihambo is looking forward to the World Athletics Championships in Budapest at the end of August.
“By then everything will be on schedule again,” said the long jump Olympic champion and two-time world champion after her victory at the International Anhalt Meeting in Dessau-Roßlau of the German Press Agency. With 6.66 meters in the last attempt, the 29-year-old set her personal best for the year after a long break with a cold.
So far, the athlete from the LG Kurpfalz had also won an international title after every victory at the Dessau Anhalt Meeting, which can be seen as a good omen for the World Championships from August 19th to 27th. “I just take it with me as a good feeling, but concentrate on what’s in my hands,” said Mihambo, adding: “I’ve already achieved so many great things that it doesn’t have to be. I’m happy if it’s still would happen one day, but I’m trying to take it easy.” She won ahead of Mikaelle Assani (SCL Baden-Baden), who had already jumped 6.91 meters this year.
Mihambo wants the World Cup hat-trick in Budapest
Mihambo wants to get her best performance back at the World Championships in Budapest after the World Cup titles in 2019 and 2022. The World Cup hat-trick has so far only been achieved by the American Brittney Reese from 2009 to 2013.
Double European champion Gina Lückenkemper is also looking forward to the title fights in Hungary’s capital. “I still have a score to settle with the World Cup. I definitely want to be in the World Cup final. That’s the big goal,” said the 26-year-old from SCC Berlin after winning the 100 meters in 11.04 seconds and announced a “mega-crass year” three weeks before the German championships.
The training in the USA pays off for the World Cup third with the sprint relay. “I’m allowed to train with world champions and Olympic champions in Florida. I’m grateful for the set-up. I’m benefiting incredibly from it,” said Lückenkemper, who was stopped at 10.98 in the lead – but the tailwind was unacceptable. “But a ten before the decimal point is nice,” she said.
